What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any sudden oral pain, trauma, or infection that requires prompt treatment to relieve pain, prevent permanent damage, or stop an active infection from spreading. If you are experiencing any of the following, call (480) 821-4868 immediately for a same-day appointment:

• Severe tooth pain that does not respond to over-the-counter pain medication
• A knocked-out permanent tooth
• A cracked, broken, or chipped tooth with pain or bleeding
• A dental abscess with visible swelling
• A lost, broken, or dislodged crown or filling that exposes tooth tissue
• Bleeding from the gums or mouth that will not stop
• A loose permanent tooth in an adult

When to go to the emergency room instead

Go to the nearest ER immediately if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward your eye, jaw, or neck, fever above 101°F combined with facial swelling, a suspected fractured jaw or significant facial trauma, head injury with any loss of consciousness, bleeding that does not stop after 20 to 30 minutes of direct pressure, or altered mental status or confusion. These are signs of a life-threatening emergency. A dental office cannot manage these conditions.

What to do right now

Severe toothache: Rinse with warm salt water. Call (480) 821-4868 for a same-day appointment.

Knocked-out permanent tooth: Speed is critical. A knocked-out permanent tooth can often be reimplanted if treated within 60 minutes of the injury. Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root. Do not scrub the root. Rinse gently with clean water if visibly dirty. Store the tooth in milk, back in the socket if possible, or between your cheek and gum. Get to A+ Family Dental Solutions immediately. Do not store the tooth in tap water.

Cracked or broken tooth: Rinse with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek. Dental wax can protect your cheek from sharp edges until you are seen. Call (480) 821-4868 for same-day care.

Lost or broken filling or crown: Dental cement sold at pharmacies as Dentemp can temporarily protect the area. If a crown fell out intact, clean it and try to reseat it temporarily using dental cement. Do not use super glue. Dr. Ashton uses CEREC in-office milling technology to place permanent porcelain crowns in a single two-hour appointment. In many emergency crown cases, you leave with a permanent restoration the same day.

Dental abscess: A dental abscess is a bacterial infection forming a pocket of pus at the tooth root or in the gum. Do not attempt to drain it yourself. Rinse with warm salt water. Call (480) 821-4868 immediately. Abscesses will not resolve without professional treatment and can spread to the jaw and neck.

Bleeding that will not stop: Bite firmly on a clean gauze pad for 20 to 30 minutes of uninterrupted pressure. A moistened black tea bag is also effective. If bleeding does not stop after 30 minutes of firm continuous pressure, go to the emergency room.
